There are many things that I like. Robots, ponies, and craftsmanship happen to be three of them. So when I see wooden pony automatons, it really gets me going. The creator, known as renegadecow, has created five wooden pony automata, each with their own different actions. If you’re wondering why we’re talking about this, you’ve clearly never seen one.
Two of these pony masterpeices feature Fluttershy, along with one for Rainbow Dash, Twilight, and Rarity. He’s spent about 120 hours working on each one, and they’ve all sold for about $450 each, excluding one of the Fluttershy automatons, which went for an outrageous price that won’t be mentioned here. Renegadecow’s creations are so incredibly original it can’t be described in writing. The least that can be done is to give him a shoutout on The Daily Oat.
The Daily Oat has had an opportunity to snag an interview from one of the people that owns one of these automatons, as well as an interview from the big guy himself.
Renegadecow was introduced to woodworking by his father, who is an architect. He’s been fascinated by automata and moving parts in general for most of his life, but only got the idea for making ponies after a failed attempt at making a plushie. The idea was there, and five automata later, he’s still going strong.
This is Fluttershy’s bird choir, which renegadecow has admitted to being the hardest automata that he has ever made. What made it really hard was the fact that it sings. The trick is that it has a slide whistle on the inside of the box. The plunger of the slide whistle is controlled by a series of cogs that move the plunger up and down to change the notes produced by the resonance chamber. If you look closely at the guts of the automaton you can see the air reservoir that is actually blowing air through the whistle, thus making the noise.
Well, that’s all that we have for now. We have an interview with Renegadecow right here, and an interview with the deviantartist who owns the Rarity automaton here. Whiteheather, who owns the Rarity automaton, has a deviantart page here, and renegadecow’s page can be found here.
